Females will produce a cria about once a year (with a gestation period of around 11 to 11 & 1/2 months). March to September is the ideal calving time and the young are mostly born between dawn and midday - a throwback to South America where crias need to be on their feet before the onset of bitterly cold nights. Calving is mostly trouble free. The young are absolutely adorable - think Bambi with long legs and woolly fleece - and the greatest fun to watch.

Four alpacas or more are a good starter herd.
Prices from £500 for a gelding male up to £4000 or so for a mother & baby.

More detailed information on basic care – nail clipping (maybe twice a year, more for some animals), a regular vaccination & worming regime and more hints on calving and so on, please call or email.
